In the lower grades, Art classes are very teacher directed. However, by the time students get to IGCSE and AS Level Art & Design, they are required to be more independent and to think for themselves.

Art & Design is a practical subject. It doesn’t involve a list of facts, formulas and content to learn, like other subjects. In Art classes, the content comes from within each student. Students are required to develop higher order thinking skills, to observe, evaluate and analyse. They develop ideas and projects, from an initial response to a topic, to a final creative solution.

Learning to deal with criticism and praise develops sensitivity and builds confidence. Students talk about their work with others, giving and getting constructive feedback, making both visual and verbal expression an important part of the Art day.
